Lajla Fetic

Lajla Fetic heads the AI Public Interest & Policy division at the appliedAI Institute for Europe. Her work centres on a single question: can public institutions keep pace with the speed of AI development? She pursues that question in regulatory practice, in Europe's digital sovereignty and in the societal and political consequences of agentic AI. At the Institute she leads the Frontier AI Navigator programme, which strengthens the capacity of European institutions to act on the next generation of AI models and systems.

Fetic advises parliaments, ministries, companies and civil society organisations on the trustworthy design of artificial intelligence. She has served as an expert witness before the European Parliament and the German Bundestag. With "AI Regulation Made in Germany?" and further studies, she has shaped the debate on the ethical, social and political integration of AI for over seven years. Previously she led projects on public-interest technology at the Bertelsmann Stiftung and chaired the working group on sociotechnical systems within the German government's AI Standardisation Roadmap.

On stage and in leading media she translates technical developments into political decisions, most recently in her TEDx talk on the influence of AI on democracy. She has been named one of the 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics.
